From August 2024, VAT registration details must be updated digitally

Starting August 5th 2024, businesses wishing to update their VAT registration information will be required to do this exclusively through their VAT online account. HMRC is tightening measures to combat fraudulent activities related to VAT repayments, and as a result, the use of form VAT 484 will be restricted from that date onwards.

Any changes to VAT registration details, including those by agents, must be processed through their agent services account or directly via the VAT online account. Clients themselves are required to handle updates to bank account details and email addresses.

The decision follows after HMRC reported that VAT 484 has been used in fraudulent attempts to gain access to business’ VAT repayments over the past few months.  HMRC has written to businesses to confirm any changes made to their details since January 2024.
