Running a business is never easy, but for women in business, it often comes with a unique set of challenges. From battling imposter syndrome to navigating the fine line between ambition and expectation, female entrepreneurs have to juggle more than just their bottom line. As a female entrepreneur, I can appreciate the time, effort and dedication it takes to build a business, like The Numbers Quarter, from the ground up.
As we celebrate International Women’s Day and 10 years of The Numbers Quarter, I want to take a moment to reflect on what it’s really like to be a run a business as a woman – because the reality is often very different from what most people imagine. Here’s my thoughts:
Women in business often feel the pressure to prove themselves more than their male peers. You have to be confident in your worth and speak up, because no one else will do it for you.
We hear so much about work-life balance, but the truth is, it’s a moving target. As a business owner, it’s easy to pour everything into your company, often at the expense of your personal life. For women, this can feel even more intense, as we’re often balancing multiple roles (leader, mentor, partner, mother, friend). So what’s the trick? Learning when to prioritise yourself without guilt.
Even after a decade in business, I still have moments where I wonder, “Am I doing this right?” Women are more likely to experience imposter syndrome, questioning their abilities despite clear success. But the reality is… no one has it all figured out. The difference is in showing up, doing the work, and backing yourself – because your success is earned, not given.
Running a business doesn’t have to be lonely. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned over the past 10 years is that your network is your greatest asset. Surround yourself with people who support you and lift you up, whether it’s mentors, a great team, or like-minded business owners who understand the journey.
Success isn’t just about turnover or headcount – it’s about building a business that gives you the life you want. For some, that’s scaling to new heights – but for others, it’s about having flexibility, financial independence, and the freedom to make your own choices. There’s no ‘right’ way to do business, only the way that works for you.
As we mark 10 years of our Bedford accountants at The Numbers Quarter, I want to celebrate all the women who have built something from the ground up, who have faced challenges head-on and kept going.
To show our support for International Women’s Day this March, we’re excited to be sponsoring Bedford’s International Women’s Day Campaign, a gallery exhibition showcasing 50 female entrepreneurs from the local business community. Keep an eye on our socials to find out more and celebrate the women who will be attending.
Whether you’re just starting out or have been in business for years, remember that your success is worth celebrating.
To all the women in business: keep pushing, keep growing, and own your place at the table!
